March 23-25 – Barking Sphinx presents Vancouver Improvised Music Meeting 2018

 

On March 23-25, 2018, Barking Sphinx Performance Society hosts the fifth annual Vancouver Improvised Music Meeting, three nights of creative improvisation, featuring the internationally acclaimed guest artists, Amsterdam violist Mary Oliver, Alabama-based guitarist Davey Williams and Seattle-based pianist/electronic musician Wayne Horvitz, alongside Vancouver’s finest innovators. Concerts will take place at Western Front and China Cloud.

November 3 – Hard Rubber New Music – The ISCM World New Music Days 2017 @ Roundhouse

Hard Rubber New Music presents a 45-minute version of Riot, a powerful multi-media work-in-progress, in development since 2015 by John Korsrud, filmmaker Brian Johnson and director Kim Collier. Riot tells the story of the shocking and destructive Vancouver hockey riot of 2011. The music will be performed by Hard Rubber Riot Ensemble. Composition by John Korsrud and video by Brian Johnson, Aram Coen and Chimerik.

November 7 – Standing Wave – The ISCM World New Music Days 2017 @ Roundhouse

Experience Standing Wave, Vancouver’s leading new music chamber ensemble, shredding some cutting-edge sounds from Canada, Israel, Estonia, and Iceland. Hafdis Bjarnadottir joins the ensemble on electric guitar for the Canadian premiere of Krónan. Canadian premieres of Märt-Matis Lill’s devastating When the Buffalo Went Away and Talia Amar’s virtuosic Reminiscence will round out the international portion of the program. The world premiere of Juno-award winning composer Jordan Nobles’ Echo Chamber, as well as James O’Callaghan’s fantastic and fascinating subject / object, are hotly anticipated.
